International Day of Happiness

On March 20, Live Happy, in cooperation with the United Nations, is celebrating International Day of Happiness, a day when thousands of individuals and organizations come together to recognize the pursuit of happiness as a fundamental human goal.

You can play a key role in the success of this event by being in charge of your own wall location!

Every year, on March 20, the world sets aside one day to celebrate and recognize the importance of happiness in our lives.

The Kingdom of Bhutan, known for adopting Gross National Happiness as a measurement of its people’s prosperity, prompted the U.N. initiative for a day devoted to happiness. Then, in June 2012, the General Assembly declared March 20 to be International Day of Happiness. This day is a symbol stating that no matter where you live, what language you speak or god you worship, you deserve a life of dignity and, yes, even happiness.

The U.N. General Assembly Resolution declaring the International Day of Happiness states, in part:

“Conscious that the pursuit of happiness is a fundamental human goal, recognizing the relevance of happiness and well-being as universal goals and aspirations in the lives of human beings around the world and the importance of their recognition in public policy objectives…we proclaim 20 March the International Day of Happiness.”

Be a Part of the Celebration:

Be inspired by your own potential impact on the world around you.

Each year, Live Happy celebrates International Day of Happiness by posting giant orange Happiness Walls in cities across the United States. Anyone can share their thoughts about happiness and post them right on the walls.

Or you can build your own happiness wall in your community. Let the world know where your pursuit of happiness has taken you, and bring others along! Order one of our complete Wall Kits for everything you need to build your own happiness wall.

Want to join in the Acts of Happiness fun? It’s easy—create your own happiness wall!

In three easy steps, you can create a happiness wall in your workplace, social group, school, even your home to share and spread happiness with everyone around you.

1. Find the perfect spot.

A blank wall. A clean whiteboard. A bare bulletin board. Big or small, there’s a spot that will work for a happiness wall.

If you want to share happiness by putting up a wall in a public location, such as your place of worship, school, or a local business, make sure that you ask for permission first.

2. Start decorating!

People need to know what your happiness wall is about! Write “I am happy because…” in big letters at the top of your wall as well as actsofhappiness.org and #HappyActs. You can get crafty with borders, so make an impression!

3. Gather supplies for sharing acts on the wall.

Make it easy to share Acts of Happiness on your wall by keeping supplies handy.

Using a whiteboard? Keep some dry-erase markers nearby.

What about a blank wall or a bulletin board? Sticky notes are a quick, easy way for people to write their Acts of Happiness. (You may want some tape or tacks for an extra stick.) Don’t forget markers and pens!

That’s it! Now, to encourage others to share their acts (no one wants to be first!), break the ice by adding a few of your own.

Did you make a happiness wall? We’d love to see it! Take a picture and share it on Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram using #HappyActs.
